Quiche
In 164 km from
Guatemala City is Santa Cruz del Quiché one of the towns that fully preserves
many of the traditions, cultures, and customs, inherited from the ancestors of
the Quiche kingdom.
Here you can feel the aroma of nature through the different fruits of the earth, product of the hard work of children, men, and women, appreciate the color of the creativity of the weavers who are inspired by ancestral beliefs and give life to the colorful costume’s characteristic of the beautiful women of the region.
In Santa Cruz del
Quiché the first rays of the sun are synonymous with a natural orange juice
accompanied by a couple of eggs, the tortillas leave the comal towards the
table, to be ingested by the men and women of corn. An ice cream is enjoyed in
the same way, both by a child and an adult. Sitting down to sunbathe on the
steps of the cathedral is a luxury that anyone who wants to can afford.
In one of the
three parks is the monument to Tecun Uman, considered the most representative
of our quiche, for its courage and dignity.
Just in front of
this park is the historic Tonelon, multipurpose room witnesses of activities
and important events the traditional sales of potatoes and fried chicken have
become a true icon of trade that silences white atol and rice toast and breads
also have a special place in the heart of Santa Cruz del Quiché.
When we enter the
market, we find a variety of Guatemalan cuisine that give color, flavor and
aroma to our traditions, although for some it is common for others the color in
the bus terminal of Santa Cruz is an attraction in which vans of different
companies that travel the Guatemalan territory converge.
Just 8 km from the center of Santa Cruz are the ruins of gumarcaaj headquarters of the last capital of the Maya Quiché, who in their time dominated much of the Guatemalan altiplano it is believed that gumarcaaj is the kingdom of xibalbá described as well in the popol vuh, here was born the prince Tecun who could be Tecun Uman, Described as a national hero of our country, history indicates that in the year of 1524 Don Pedro de Alvarado sent to burn gumarcaaj after learning of a plot against him. In the great square there are four temples commemorating the four founding gods of Gumarcaaj
